CHOOSE LOCAL CAMPAIGN - What Goes Around. . . .
August 31, 2011 - When you purchase from locally owned businesses, more money re-circulates in the Port Angeles community. Local businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers, and farms. On average, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, up to $70 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the city's tax base.

Choose LocalChoose Local PA is a local initiative created by the Port Angeles Forward Committee at the behest of the Port Angeles City Council. Its aim is to educate residents as to why their support of the local business community is a direct benefit to the community as a whole and to the individuals who live here.

There are thousands of Buy Local campaigns nationally, many of which were studied by Port Angeles Forward. This grassroots effort was renamed Choose Local in recognition that customers have choices and that needs to be respected. The aim is to make a clear and vocal case for the benefits of supporting local enterprise, whether it's retail, manufacturing or services. The hope is that the program will develop over time and prove effective in helping to bring greater prosperity to our region.

BIKE BOXES on FIRST STREET
The First Street Stormwater Separation Project is completed. Last component installed is a feature called Bike Boxes. Bike Boxes help direct bicycles so that they can better maneuver with traffic, resulting in a more efficient and safer traffic flow. The aim of these new measures is to encourage more cycling by creating a safer, more comfortable road environment.

BikeBoxPosterWhat is a bike box? The bike box is an intersection safety design to prevent bicycle/car collisions. It is a painted green space on the road with a white bicycle symbol inside. In some locations it includes a green bicycle lane approaching the box. The box creates space between motor vehicles and the crosswalk that allows bicyclists to position themselves ahead of motor vehicle traffic at an intersection.

Why are bike boxes being installed? The main goal of the bike box is to improve safety by 1- increasing awareness and visibility of cyclists; 2- helping cyclists make safer intersection crossings - especially when drivers are turning and bicyclists are going straight; 3 – encouraging cyclists to make more predictable approaches to and through an intersection; and 4 – providing space at the front of an intersection to help cyclists avoid breathing vehicle fumes.

What motorists should know
When the traffic signal is yellow or red, motorists must stop behind the white stop line. Don't stop on top of the green bike box. Keep it clear for cyclists to use. Typically at bike box locations, right turns on red will not be permitted.

When the light turns green, motorists and cyclists may move through the intersection as usual, with cyclists going first. Motorists turning right on green should signal and watch for cyclists to the right, especially in the green bike lane in the intersection.

What bicyclists should know

  • When the traffic signal is yellow or red, enter the bike box from the approaching green bike lane.
  • Stop before the crosswalk.
  • When the light is green, proceed as normal. Be aware of right-turning motorists, especially while in the green bike lane in the intersection.

How to use bike boxes if you are …
A Cyclist - When the light is red or turning red, enter the bike box along the bike lane. Once you are in the bike box, position yourself according to the direction you are intending to go.

Turning left: Move to the left of the bike box and signal that you're turning left.
Going through: Position yourself in front of the through lane.
Turning right: Move close to the right edge of the roadway and signal that you're turning right.

How to use bike boxes if you are …
A Motorist - When the signal is red, you should stop at the stop line marked on the road. The stop line will be located just before the green box.

YARD WORK - It Includes the Area Around your Electric & Water Meters
Spring CleaningThis time of year, we work outside in the yard and your City is no exception! With brighter days, your Utilities Department does routine maintenance inspections. So we're asking residents to take a look around their meters to make sure the area is clear, and that access is easy and safe for City workers to service the meters.

  • Be sure there is a minimum of three clear feet in front of your electric meter's base, pad, or pedestal. There should be no plants or other items that might block or prevent access.
  • For water meters, please make sure there is a clear space of six feet in front of the box, also with nothing blocking access.
  • If you have any trash, yard waste, or storage containers in the meters' working areas, please remove them.

Keeping a clear working area around your meter will be a big help to City workers and aid in making sure the equipment is maintained properly.

If you have any questions about clear areas or meters in general, call 360-457-0411, extension 1. Thanks for your help!

CATCH BASIN MAINTENANCE - How You Can Help
Storm Drain Melting snow and heavy rainstorms can rapidly lead to sand, leaves, and debris covering catch basins and blocking the flow of stormwater, resulting in flooding on streets and/or nearby driveways.

Residents can help by removing debris off of catch basin grates at street corners in their neighborhood. Any assistance the citizens of Port Angeles can provide in keeping catch basins open and free of debris during storm events will be very much appreciated.

RESULTS of COMMUNITY SURVEY on BUDGET PRIORITIES
Click to go to Survey ResultsAugust 28, 2010 - In developing the 2011 City Budget, the City Council and City staff recognized that certain difficult financial decisions would need to be made in order to create a balanced budget without requiring any tax increases. It was decided that public input was critical to guide the City in this challenging process, in order to better understand community priorities. Several methods were initiated to solicit this public input; these included conducting a town meeting on the budget and City Council members attending the Farmers' Market on several Saturdays to solicit feedback on the budget.......

A total of over 1400 survey forms were completed, which represents about 15% of the total households in Port Angeles. This included 998 responses from the utility bill insert, 382 responses on-line, and 82 responses to the printed survey forms. This is an excellent response rate and confirms the high level of interest that local citizens have in their city government. With this high level of response, the priorities that have been identified will be very useful to the City Council and City staff in the development of the 2011 Budget.......

City Council will be discussing the results of the survey at their special meeting on Tuesday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m.
